As of 2024, the British Touring Car Championship will run a new qualifying format called the ‘Quick Six’.

The term ‘Quick Six’ comes from the third round of qualifying where the six fastest cars of the day will compete to claim pole position.

Fans have had a mixed reaction to this new change that has been made.

Some fans have embraced the change and think that it will bring more excitement to the track, especially for those who attend live races on a Saturday.

Others have been a bit more hesitant and feel that it creates confusion for casual fans.

As explained in the video above, all cars will be split into two groups.

The groups they are put into will be determined by the position they finish in at the end of Free Practice 2 (FP2).

The cars that finish in an odd numbered position (e.g 1, 3, 5, etc), will be sorted into one group and the cars that finish in an even numbered position (e.g 2, 4, 6, etc) will be put into the other group.

In Qualifying one, both groups will get the chance to set the fastest lap that they can in a ten minute session.

There will be two separate sessions, one for each group.

The fastest six cars from each group will then progress to qualifying 2.

Now that we have 12 cars, another ten minute session will take place.

Once again, these cars will compete to set the fastest lap that they can.

The top 6 fastest cars will then move on to qualifying 3.

Finally it’s time for qualifying 3 and we have the 6 most rapid cars of the day.

This is where the phrase ‘Quick Six’ has developed from.

These cars will compete for the third time of the day in order to secure the prized pole

position.

At the end of the ten minute session, whichever position they finish in will be their starting position for the first race of that weekend.
